MMK Sets a New Mark in Virgin Fibre Cartonboard

18.09.2013 - Virgin Fibre Cartonboard

Mayr-Melnhof Karton sharpens its image as a provider of impressive GC-qualities with best service: MMK captures the virgin fibre cartonboard market with a new GC brand image, enhanced, sustainable self-sufficiency with high-quality pulp and systematic investment in its mills.

Intelligent, playful, inspiring: The new GC brand sets the stage for Mayr-Melnhof Karton’s virgin fibre based cartonboard grades in a unique way. MMK implemented the striking look with artistic support: New Zealand designer Phil Cuttance and Italian artist Alberto Seveso created powerful works of art for MMK true to the slogan ‘The fascination of cartonboard’.The new identity is particularly reflected by the Sample Book and the Sample Cube: While the former presents an exclusive selection of MMK‘s unrivalled folding box board product range in reduced elegance, the Sample Cube takes the new creative and inspiring GC identity up in an extraordinary way. Inspired by the Rubik‘s Cube, ‘players‘ will be invited with all their senses into the world of MMK‘s virgin fibre grades.

With three GC segments - Luxury, Standard and Environmentally Friendly - MMK offers a wide GC product range for a variety of applications.

MMK demonstrates its commitment to the virgin fibre cartonboard segment and secures its in-house supply of high-grade wood pulp through the acquisition of the MMK FollaCell AS pulp mill. MMK has been producing mechanical pulp directly in its cartonboard mills for many years, now though, they can rely on in-house BCTMP and CTMP (bleached and chemothermomechanical pulp) that is consistently monitored for the production of their cartonboard qualities. The acquisition of the pulp mill in Norway in mid-2013 provides an important contribution to sustainable supply security and consistent quality assurance.

The Dutch Eerbeek mill in particular benefits from the geographic proximity to MMK FollaCell AS. Thanks to its excellent opacity, a high degree of brightness and brilliant gloss, the GC1 quality Silvawhite™, produced in Eerbeek, exceeds the high-end market’s requirements and is the number one choice for high quality packaging solutions, particularly well-suited for cosmetics and chocolate.

Food packaging usually has to meet the highest sensory requirements, and the industry expects a high degree of supply security with short lead times. With a Robinson value ≤1.0, all qualities of the Luxury (Silvawhite™, Optimus Top™) and Standard GC segment (Excellent Top™, Silvaboard™) are ideal for this application. The unique MultiMill Concept for Excellent Top™ produced in Germany and Slovenia, ensures the highest level of security of supply, even for extremely high demand.

Guaranteed security of supply and reliability of service and quality are of particular importance in the pharmaceutical industry. Given the forthcoming implementation of the EU Medical Directive and the subsequent obligation to encode each pharmaceutical package with a ‘unique identifier’, the quality requirements for cartonboard are rising. For several years, MMK has invested in research and development to fully meet the future requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, all MMK qualities have ideal inkjet and laser coding properties. The laboratory at the virgin fibre mill in Baiersbronn, Germany, has special equipment for real-life coding and readability tests.

As the world‘s largest producer of coated recycled cartonboard, MMK also has the perfect answer to increasing demands regarding environmental issues in the GC segment: Kromopak™ from Kolicevo and Linoplex™ from Eerbeek. Eco-friendly use of high-quality recovered paper (mainly wood-free, unprinted, whitepaper) together with certified wood pulp allows MMK to make a significant contribution to meeting sustainability goals. Kromopak™ is produced in the Slovenian mill in Kolicevo, which sets the standard for continuous innovation with the most modern board machine and packaging line in the European industry.

The strategically advantageous geographical position of our GC mills in the middle of Europe guarantees shortest transport routes with flexible delivery services, while ensuring continuously high quality through the use of controlled raw materials and modern technologies. The result: Consistently high-quality chromo cartonboard, reliable delivery with short lead times and satisfied customers.
