McDonald's goes natural with Browncolor for salad bowls

15.11.2019 - Recycled Cartonboard, Sustainability, Customer Stories

To go, please! Sustainability is becoming an important topic for on-the-go consumption. McDonald´s, one of the forerunners of sustainability, has proven once again that there are no limits to the development of innovative, recycled fibre-based packaging concepts whose possible applications go far beyond the beaten tracks. Now salad bowls made out of MM Karton´s cartonboard Browncolor completely replace the single-use plastic containers. The positive environmental impact: every year 100 tons*) less plastic for McDonald’s in the UK and in Ireland alone! This innovative step has been honored with nominations at the UK Packaging Awards in the categories "Innovation of the Year” and “Resource Efficient Pack of the Year"!

One step closer to ambitious sustainability goals

McDonald's aims for fully sustainable packaging and has committed itself to ensure all of its packaging is made from renewable, recycled or certified materials by 2025. In accordance with the McDonald's Scale for Good program, they were searching for alternative, natural and resource-efficient materials to replace the fossil-based, single-use plastic salad containers for their large and also side salads. Not an easy endeavour, as salads for the to-go market are commonly packed in plastic. They found the answer in a clever combination of a good packaging construction and MM Karton´s Browncolor, a brown recycled Kraft cartonboard.

Browncolor – does not leave any scars on the environment, fully biodegradable

The consistently natural brown colour of the top and reverse sides guarantees premium product presentation and a natural feeling. The reverse side moisture and grease barrier coating is made from organic, renewable ingredients maintaining packaging stability as well as ensuring protection against annoying grease spots and discolourations. Browncolor is fully biodegradable. Choosing cartonboard also helps to minimise the packaging weight: A lower transport weight enables fewer emissions in logistics and improves the overall carbon footprint.

With this plastic substitution, McDonald´s has moved one step closer to the self-defined sustainability goal, but much more important: McDonald´s shows that listening to customers and thinking outside the box can often result in finding sustainable packaging solutions in a box.
