Research and development are of special importance in the corporate strategy of Mayr-Melnhof Karton. Therefore all mills continuously invest into the further development of our products.

Environmentally friendly processes, environmentally friendly products, improved quality and service are the results of a close co-operation between staff and customers. MM-Karton has succeeded in further improving individual product parameters of recycled cartonboard such as gloss, surface smoothness, and running performance to be able to further increase the possible applications of Mayr-Melnhof recycled cartonboard.

The research activities of the Mayr-Melnhof cartonbard division are carried out by the individual mills in close co-operation with the central laboratory at the Frohnleiten mill. The central laboratory also coordinates the project-related cooperation with universities and research institutions.

These also include projects for the reduction of ingredients and the avoidance of migration to the packaged goods. Co-operation with reputable institutions within the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) intends to prove that recycled cartonboard meets the future requirements of the resolution by the Council of Europe and many of the defined test parameters are far below the given threshold values or migration limits.

Here the Biosafepaper project which is subsidised by the EU also must be mentioned. The objective is to produce a single biological testing procedure or a test set (toxicity tests) describing the adequacy of cartonboard packaging for different requirements and proving that cartonboard can be used to package foodstuffs without any problem.
