R&D Competence Center

The Austrian parent mill in Frohnleiten remains the geographical centre of MM Karton’s innovative activities. Following extensive expansion, since April 2010 a larger scientific pool of experts has been at work, with access to significantly expanded, state-of-the-art equipment.

The centre of excellence essentially covers three priority areas: Research & development, product safety, and analytical chemistry.

Research & Development

R&D activities are expanded gradually according to development topics. These include, amongst others:

  • unprocessed cartonboard production as such, e.g. the use of alternative fibrous materials and/or fibrous modifications,
  • the improvement of cartonboard properties,
  • adaptating cartonboard surfaces to changing requirements by applying functional surfaces, as well as
  • improvements in processability

Particular attention is paid to polymer chemistry and its analytical procedures for modifying fibres and developing functional surfaces.

Product safety

This area is dedicated to providing customers with extensive support regarding all issues of product safety. These issues are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the food packaging sector, as increased awareness of food safety continually results in greater demands. The product safety and compliance department based in Frohnleiten supports the packaging division of Mayr-Melnhof (MM Packaging) as well as the cartonboard division (MM Karton).

Analytical chemistry

Analytical chemistry forms the third pillar of the centre of excellence. Thanks to its equipment and facilities, the department is able to reliably and sensitively determine the slightest quantities, both in sample preparation and the determination of chemical compounds. Therefore, the team is also a recognised contact partner among key food manufacturers.
