Mayr-Melnhof Karton recognised the opportunities offered by efficient recycling concepts as early as in the fifties and has been implementing them incessantly ever since. The idea of a closed value-creation-chain from raw materials to the final product has been an overwhelming success.

Mayr-Melnhof Karton cartonboard is manufactured on state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly production plants. The result is an ecologically and economically optimum packaging material for our customers.

The certification of all mills in Western Europe according to the ISO 9001 standard as well as the certification of the Frohnleiten, Hirschwang, Deisswil and Eerbeek plants according to the comprehensive ISO 14001 environmental standards were important milestones for Mayr-Melnhof Karton.

The Frohnleiten and Hirschwang mills also voluntarily participated in the EU Community system for environmental management and the environmental operation audit and meet the requirements of the EC Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS-Regulation).

In 2002 Mayr-Melnhof with the certification of all cartonboard plants except for Kolicevo and Nikopol according to the HACCP hygiene management system took an important pioneering step towards product safety in the use of cartonboard in the delicate foodstuffs and pharmaceutical areas.
